RARE CARVED WALNUT CANDLE BOX
Pennsylvania
Circa 1790-1825
From a Illinois collection we are pleased to offer this Rare Carved Candle Box. The slide-top candle box is in the Best Undisturbed “As Found” Condition. It is constructed from a Highly Figured Walnut with dovetail joinery. Its excellent undisturbed original dry surface is highlighted by the wonderful grain of the wood. The slide lid has chamfered edges with a relief carved central panel. The panel has a carved thumb notch and scratched sgraffito style carved decorations; A stylized leafed plant within a cross hatched pot and a fine pin wheel generating a feeling of circular movement. The carved decorations are similar in feeling and execution to polychromed motifs on Pennsylvania decorated blanket chests. The cabinetmaker has transformed this utilitarian object into a art form. A Rare Carved Candle Box that would enhance anyone’s Folk Art Collection.
