HOOKED RUG MASTERPIECE
“THE LEOPARDS”
Found in Scriba, New York
Circa 1860’s
This striking piece of American 19th Century Folk Art was strongly influenced by American artist Edward Hicks (1780-1849). His series of Peaceable Kingdom Paintings adopted the theme of the passage from Isaiah: The Leopard of Serenity. This Folk Art Hooked Rug is a masterpiece of primitive design that is bold in conception, capturing a simplified rendering of the Quaker Doctrine of Salvation in light, harmony and peace.
The warmth and mood of the rug is shown in the makers choice and use of texture and its vibrant colors. This picturesque Eden like semi tropical landscape, along with the serene highly expressive wide eyed spotted leopards, signify hope and optimism.
The Folk Artist demonstrated depth in the rug in the way he used the stars in the sky, the leopards in the foreground and the palm tree and foliage in the middle ground. Night scenes are uncommonly found in antique hooked rugs. The stars in the sky and the leopards bedding down for the night portrays this rare and unique feature.
This Folk Artist has conceived a most dramatic way to intricately tie its attributes to a wonderful symmetrical design which includes its overall tranquil beauty. This exceptional hooked rug is important and a significant piece of American Folk Art. ” A HOOKED RUG – MASTERPIECE “.
