FEDERAL SIDE CHAIR
RHODE ISLAND
Circa 1780 – 1795
The Federal Period was time of fashionable change. Within the Federal Period, the chairs produced had a appearance which was profoundly different from those preceding. As shown here the new vision is more austere, but not less elegant. A period carryover in this pedestal-back chair is the splat and stiles; but the serpentine crest rail, neoclassical carved ornament, tapered legs, and general lightening of the members all indicate the influence of the new fashionable change of the American Federal Period.
