FINE MAHOGANY MERIDIENNE

New York City – Circa 1825 – 1830

Attributed to DUNCAN PHYFE or One of His Contemporaries.

Superior to the routine examples of its period, this American Meridienne speaks well for the genius of its design and the craftsman who made it. The meridienne’s elegant appearance seems to be achieved through the severe geometry of its curving lines which takes inspiration from ancient sources yet is in no way a routine copy of classical antiquity.

Made in the fashion of the French Restauration, the meridienne’s graceful sweeping lines and its plain back are highlighted by a shaped mahogany crest rail. The crest rail creates a silhouetted line along its graceful form which contributes to the movement and rhythm felt.

The meridienne’s finest detail, a common one found on the best Phyfe Furniture in the Restauration Period, is the beautifully carved Egyptian motif of lonic lotus leaves which are found on the finely developed scrolling legs.

In excellent original structural condition, the meridienne’s back is also upholstered allowing it to be used in the center of a room. A fine addition to any collection of Classical Furnishings, this petite and excellent proportioned meridienne deserves a privileged ranking by virtue of its graceful lines and carvings as a Grace of Elegance.
