Pair QUEEN ANNE SIDE CHAIRS

Britain probably Ireland

Circa 1730 – 1760

Chairs of this character were imported from England by wealthy merchants in America in the 1720’s. The rounded back stiles, appear to have been inspired by Chinese furniture. The cabriole front legs have rounded knees and adjacent brackets lined with carved ogee and C scrolls flanking which terminates to cushioned disks beneath the pad feet. These chairs also have other variations encountered on fine Queen Anne chairs. There were customer options which added premiums to the basic cost of a framed chair, the scrolled-lined front knees, shaped front rails and the compass seats ( a horseshoe shape that became fashionable in the 1730’s ). Enhanced with its finely grained mahogany, there is a quiet elegance expressed in the chairs line, form and the abstract play of solids and voids – all creating a pleasing visual effect.
