FOLK ART WATERCOLOR – MRS. TROTTER & FAMILY
Found in Pennsylvania
Circa 1830

This watercolor on paper of Mrs. Trotter age 84 Sept.1830 is much more than an ordinary family portrait. The folk artist had a unique approach to his subjects. As one observes, the three generations bear no optical relationship to their background. The figures float on the background as if they were pasted on top of the paper. This technique gives a three dimensional illusion. In her graphic apparel, the small scale of the young lady at the right is an interesting detail. Note the bed curtains, their movement is as if they are encompassing the figures. The seated cat, assumed Mrs. Trotter’s favorite pet. This Wonderful Folk Watercolor is presented in a period paint decorated frame.
