EXCEPTIONAL RUNNING and or LEAPING HORSE WEATHERVANE
New York or New England – possibly by Thomas W. Jones
Circa 1860 – 1890
Horse Weathervanes have a quality of motion that is inherently charming. Equestrian figures were very popular in the late 1800s because horses were the main mode of transportation. Later they became sporting obsessions, and particular horses and their riders became celebrities. Their likenesses were made into weathervanes.
Although the Horse form weathervane was commonly offered in wide variety of styles, they were manufactured by many companies. This running and or leaping example without a rider is a uncommonly seen example. Copper sheets were hammered into a mold and then soldered together to recreate the body. This full body molded copper horse vane exhibits great form and motion with a exceptional oxidized greenish verdigris surface.
Illustrations in the catalogues of weathervane manufacturers did not always represent the actual vane precisely. The horses accurate depiction in particular styles are represented in illustrations of many weathervane makers.
Thomas Jones of New York offered in their “Illustrated Catalogue and Price List of Copper Weather Vanes and Emblematic Signs Manufactured by Thomas W. Jones” Horses with the same pose, streamlined head, and tail. (1882 catalogue, Pate 4, No 7 & 7A).
Head position while running is a key identifier in race horses in general and particularly so in 19th century weathervanes, most of which were copied from Currier & Ives prints (Salvator & Tenny)
This Weathervane, Running and or Leaping Horse, is a uncommon form and stands apart for its outstanding form and wonderful motion to the body. The large size is further complemented with a vibrant, colorful untouched original patina. This beautifully executed example in original condition has wonderful form, definition, clean lines and wonderful proportions which are further complimented by its remarkable state of preservation.
