18TH CENTURY FAIENCE TIN GLAZED EARTHENWARE BALUSTER FORM TANKARD
England
Circa third quarter 18th century
Rare delftware shaped baluster form earthenware faience tankard with a lid. Tankard has polychrome tin glazes with a unusual charming chinoiserie landscape scene. It’s depicting an English interpretation of pastoral life in China of a man with scattered flowering branches and butterflies. The ear shaped handle, spout and the lid are decorated with leafy vines with flowering plants. The tin glaze decoration has the colors yellow, blue, purple and green enamels over a white ground. The decoration is simple and sophisticated as a substitute to the expense Chinese porcelain exports.
The underside with a purple mark.
