CHIPPENDALE CHERRY HIGHBOY
Connecticut
Circa 1760 – 1780

This Fine Quality Chippendale Highboy stands as a statement of American cabinetwork. The superb quality of this Highboy is evident in the skilled craftsmanship and its architectural formation. The scale and mastery of proportion by the cabinetmaker resulted in an exciting and highly successful composition. The full bonnet top has a sweeping movement which is complemented by the spin of the carved pin wheels on the frieze drawer and in a smaller version on the arched ends of fully developed terminals.

The pin wheel carved center drawer is flanked by arched drawers following the contour of the arched crest. The upper case has nicely proportioned graduated lipped drawers flanked by well executed fluted pilasters. ( An architectural refinement which is rare, a favorite characteristic in eastern Massachusetts ) This integrated with its broken arch top creates a slender vertical appeal. The lower case appropriately is housing a long drawer above three boxed drawers with the lower central drawer of greater width and having a well carved fan. The front skirt is shaped to three flatheaded arches conforming in size to the drawers and separated by turned drops.

All the above is lifted upwards on cabriole legs ending with spurred knee brackets terminating downwards to slender ankles ending in pad feet platformed on nicely compressed balls.

This refurbished highboy stands in a fine state of preservation with a mellow warm surface that extends the exciting nature of this Sophisticated Urban Bonnet Top Highboy.
