YOUNG LADY with PEARLS
New York
Circa: 1820
Occasionally the line between folk and academic art becomes a thin line. This can be seen in this formal likeness of this young lady posed with her wonderful jewelry, flowers in her hair and stylized clothing. The convincing setting, well-articulated figure, and competent brushwork indicate that this artist (probably A. Tuthill) was a professional portraitist of skill and experience.
