QUEEN ANNE WALNUT DRESSING TABLE / LOWBOY
Circa 1740-1760
Penn. / Mid-Atlantic States

It is rewarding to have found this Fine Quality Dressing Table in this untouched wonderful old estate condition. A simple walnut but sophisticated rural Dressing Table of excellent proportions, not heavy looking or ornamented, yet convey a feeling of richness. This early example’s simplicity of design, good craftsmanship combining with its choice old if not original patina is pleasing when viewed from any angle.

Throughout the Eighteenth Century as referred within period documents, the term dressing table was used for this furniture form. Today this form is know as a Lowboy.

Influences between cabinet making traditions between the Northern and Southern coastal centers should not be surprising in view of the amount of trade that occurred throughout the eighteenth century.
This Dressing Table has a unusual eye appealing design. It represents innovative cabinetwork portrayed by
a rural cabinetmaker that was obviously looking at the fashionable designs of major cities.

The one board top has thumbnail molding at the front and sides and overhangs the case on all four sides. Typical of the form, the case holds five thumbnail lipped deep drawers, three drawers above two in a row. Each drawer pull appears to retain their original engraved brass secured by cotter pins. The row of three drawers has the central one higher in height and a wider width than its flanking drawers. Below are two drawers on either of a high central arch. The sides and front of apron are shaped and match in a horizontal plane, while the shape of the cabrole legs in a vertical plane. With these graceful curves it provides a continuation of the outline of the skirt. This central arch in the skirt is a late William and Mary and Early Queen Anne Design while the lipped drawers are an early Queen Anne feature. The case is supported and lifted on four graceful sharp edged cabriole legs that taper and terminate in a simple drake feet. This Fine Quality Dressing Table is straightforwardly in form, yet a rare and most unusual detail are the forward-facing rear (walking feet).

After total examination, one can sense and feel the total sleekness of design and the serene character of this
wonderful 18th Century Queen Anne Dressing Table. The desirable rare diminutive 28″ size and compact proportions that combines the refinement and the precision of its construction all add to its excellence and visual enjoyment one receives.
