American Painted Tinware a Important Folk-Decorated Item of the 19th Century

Painted tinware was a technique which came from the old world. In New England as they learned the technique it became very popular on utilitarian household objects. Decorated tin forms were distributed throughout the eastern part of our country by traveling peddlers. Toleware ,a French name commonly used today, was both inexpensive and colorful. The painted tin was common to most households showing a variety in their decoration. Most of the decorations painted in America had coloring that was rich with designs of foliage and stylized flowers.

Today, we can appreciate toleware for its beauty and decorativeness. Now its a Form of American Folk Art.
