MARBLE TOP SIDEBOARD – Joseph Meeks & Sons
New York City
Circa 1833 -1845

Upon first observing this Fine Quality Sideboard, special attention should be given towards its precisely balanced cabinetry. To enjoy the excellence of a piece of furniture of this sort, one must be prepared to spend time examining its geometric refinement and the precision of its construction. The cabinetmakers overall achievement is a unified composition, serene and powerful.

This fine sideboard is composed of curves and severe straight lines that was a American characteristic of fashionable interiors of this period. The special order of the impressive original multi-grained black marble (Egyptian marble) top creates a contrasting feature as it rests upon its rich mahogany base. Solid character is notably illustrated in the design accented with a stunningly arrayed of luxurious grained mahogany veneers. The highly grained wood joins with the flowing lines of its base construction creating a visual excitement that becomes optic art.

The Meeks Family was a important cabinetmaking firm in the American Classical Period. In 1833, a printed color advertisement showed examples of their inventory.
