CLASSICAL MARBLE-TOP CENTER TABLE
New York City
Joseph W. Meeks and Sons or one of his contemporaries
Circa 1830 – 1835

The adoption of the Classical Period in America witnessed the ascendance of center tables as the dominant piece of furniture in large entrance halls and rooms devoted to sociability. Their fashionable status is confirmed by their appearance in the White House in 1829…

The beauty of this center table can be seen by examining its geometry, refinement and the precision of its construction. Adding to the cabinetmaker’s masterful sense of style is the impressive original multi-grained black (Egyptian marble) marble top. The marble creates a contrasting feature as it rests upon a rich mahogany base. The masterful sense of style associated with the Meeks Family is evident with the overall composition of this Fine Quality Marble Top Center Table.

This center table is of a very desirable and useful size for most rooms (36″ diameter marble top).

Estate “as found” condition. Overall condition of center table is good – some veneer loss – no cracks or repairs to marble.
