CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY OXBOW SERPENTINE DESK
Salem, Massachusetts
Circa 1780

A Fine Chippendale Carved Mahogany Slant-lid Desk having clean American Lines which are commanding in appearance, commodious in nature and exhibits the immediate sense of stateliness. This refurbished Desk has pleasing writing accommodations. There is a rhythmic design to its interior. Centrally located is a paneled prospect door opening to a valance drawer over a interior pigeon hole and carved concave interior drawer. Flanking the prospect door are split baluster turned spindles facing document drawers. A series of nicely shaped valances are above their pigeon holes and a single interior long drawer. On both extreme interior sides are four stacked short drawers. The case holds four graduated serpentine drawers each is outlined by cock beading on the case as well as on the molding on the drawer dividers. There is a base molding at the front and sides of the case. The case is supported by four gadroon-carved bracket feet and a centrally shaped gadroon-carved drop pendant. The sturdy vigor of the Chippendale Period is accurately and handsomely detailed in this Fine Quality Oxbow Serpentine Desk.
