Faience ware was Europe’s way to compete with the imported expensive Chinese porcelain. The body of the stein was made on a potter’s wheel and fired in a kiln. Then it was dipped in a rich white tin glaze to produce a smooth surface to emulate porcelain. When dried the stien body was painted with polychrome decorations and fired a second time.
