“Amherst Japan” Gaudy Ironstone Bowl

England – Circa 1840 – 1870

The bowl’s base is marked with the pattern name of “Amherst Japan” and the word “Ironstone” within a scroll banner surrounded by flowers. This design of bowl was probably originally produced in the Minton & Boyle period (1836-41).

The pattern is a blue transfer design which has been hand painted / colored in Imari colors of red, pale pink, green and cobalt blue with gilt overlaid on the blue in places. It is sometimes called the Gaudy or Imari style. The design shows a little pagoda in the inside base of the bowl surrounded by a stunning array of large flowers executed in the Japanese fashion. There is a line of yellow around the rim of the bowl. It is a very colorful and vibrant piece.

No chips, cracks or restoration.
