CLASSICAL BREAKFAST TABLE
Philadelphia or New York
Circa 1815-1825

The Classical Spirit is captured in the development of this Finest Quality Table. The table’s top and hinged leaves are veneered with a opulent grained mahogany. Below is a single drawer with a corresponding false drawer each with applied brass ornamentation highlighting the skirt. Underneath is a stylized richly carved pedestal support with a vase turning above a unique combination of acanthus leaves curling outwards toward the top. The legs of this table are affixed directly to the pedestal with no platform base. The four hocked animal legs have a extraordinary delineation of carving. Each high outward swept leg is topped by acanthus carving to the knee and centered with a flower. The combination of pedestal and legs gives the table a vertical lift and balance. The cabinet maker has created a bold sculptural form having a visually strong statement.

The excellent mahogany, quality carving, and detail of execution are all superlative, leading to an overall form which exceeds the sum of the parts as shown in this Excellent Quality Table.

This handsome table descended in the prominent Beverly Chew Family of Geneva,NY
Family residence is currently Prouty-Chew Museum.
