CHIPPENDALE CORNER CHAIR

Circa 1740 – 1780
Chippendale “Roundabout” corner chair in mahogany with scrolled outset, hockey punk, rounded arms. Making a beautiful silhouette are the flanking carved spats with hearts between three nicely turned column supports. Chair has the original wood seat frame within a molded edge seat frame. Below are square molded legs, front with a beaded edge, connected by molded box stretchers. A handsome chair in old if not original finish.

The Roundabout or Corner Chairs were originally for men’s dressing; but were considered so comfortable they made there way to libraries and reading rooms of the well healed. They are sometimes referred to at sword chairs because of the idea that a man could sit in one of these while wearing a sword.
