AMERICAN ANGEL WEATHERVANE / SCULPTURE
Property from a N.Y.S. Collection
Mid 20th Century
A stylized version of a Angel Weathervane which is a superb example of a 20th Century design. The basic principles of artistic integrity, proportion and balance are applied as in the genre of the Great Gilded Age, 1870-1910, of commercial weathervanes in America.
Of all the many subjects used for weathervanes, one of the most scare and sought after is the Angel. Traditionally this form was mostly made as a flat cut iron silhouette. This Fine Angle example is a three- dimensional molded copper form with wonderful detail.
The maker was quite successful, the Angel has long streaming hair being carried by his spread wings as he adorns his long trumpet.
This graceful design is not only a weathervane but a wonderful sculpture made in the true tradition of American Folk Art. A fine example that transcends American Folk Art into a piece of charming sculpture for any interior.
Original Mid Century patina – No repairs or replacements – Accompanied by a museum stand.
