FOLK ART CARVED BIBLE BOX – OTIS FAMILY
Late 19th – Early 20th Century
Cape Vincent, New York

Found in Watertown, NY, this most unusual carved bible box is in the form of a book. Descended in the Otis Family of Cape Vincent, NY, this painted and wood carved box was made to stow away for neatness and safekeeping their bible, important documents and or other personal belongings.
This folk art carved box has a stylized wooden relief carving of a opened bible which is centered and flanked by two symmetrically large stemmed roses. When the large box is opened the lid contains two glued prints one a rose the other two swans. There are original documents remaining with the box, two Holy Baptism Records along with photo images.
A simple utilitarian box that was brought to an art form. Its makers imaginative carving, bright colors and bold decoration place this as a fine example of American Sculptural Folk Art.
