FEDERAL CARVED FIRE SCREEN
Massachusetts
Circa 1790 – 1810
This fire screen is a Federal interpretation of a favored form during the Chippendale Period. The excellent carving in the pillar base and the well developed platformed snake feet are decorative motifs also seen in Salem Federal Furniture. The shield shaped screen edge is veneered with mahogany. Its wonderful original carved finial is removable. The screen panel is covered with a schoolgirl three dimensional felt & silk flower arrangement.
The cabinetmaker has transformed this utilitarian object into a art form. A Carved Federal Fire Screen that would enhance anyone’s Folk Art Collection.
