STEEPLECHASE WEATHERVANE
JOHN GARRET THEW
20th Century
Norfolk, Conn.
John Garret Thew carried on the work of his father, Robert Garret Thew of Westport, to become one of Connecticut’s Premier Weathervane Artist. When his father became afflicted with arthritis he took over most of the elder Mr. Thew’s work, which made signs, sundials and silhouette weathervanes. John learned the essentials of good art from his father, good workmanship coupled with good design. After his fathers death in 1964, John designed and made over 11,500 copper weathervanes. He retired when he turned 90 from making his renowned copper weathervanes in 2017.
John Garret Thew a folk artist who created his works from handmade molds always strived for realism in his weathervane figures.
The painted full bodied copper weathervane has a large and impressive scale. It is in very good condition capturing a movement in time as the horse and rider jumps. A extremely powerful and moving American Folk Art Sculpture.
