BLACK HAWK WEATHERVANE

A classic design of a trotting three dimensional full-bodied molded copper horse weathervane. A sheet copper tail and zinc applied ears. The weathervane’s original condition is further complemented with a wonderful original partially gilt surface and patina.
The Black Hawk horse weathervane is an iconic 19th-century American folk art piece. Modeled after the legendary 1840s trotting racehorse. The Blackhawk, a popular breed of horse sold by the Blackhawk Family of Weare, New Hampshire.
Founder Josephus Harris acquired the molds and tools of pioneer weathervane maker A.L. Jewell in 1867. Operating in the late 19th century as Harris & Company. Harris & Company was one of the most prominent American manufacturers of mass-produced, high-quality weathervanes. They made a wide variety of styles, the horse form being the most appealing and popular.
