FINE MAHOGANY SOFA
New York City – Circa 1825 -1830
Attributed to DUNCAN PHYFE or One of His Contemporaries.
The masterful sense of style associated with one of New York City’s cabinetmakers is evident in the overall makeup of this Mahogany sofa. This sofa, speaks well for the genius of its design and the cabinet shop who made it. Despite its dainty size and relatively simple basic shape, this small sofa has a vigor of design that carries power. The cabinet maker has chosen only the use of excellent mahogany. The sofa’s proportions are beautifully balanced. The strong contrast of rich coloring of the highly figured mahogany and the boldness of design quintessence the intent of the Post Empire French Taste or Resturation Period.
Repurchased from a sophisticated collection, we are pleased to offer this very satisfying piece of furniture made in New York City at the time when only the more fortunate and prominent could afford such furnishings. The sofa’s back is also upholstered allowing it to be used in the center of a room, as well as, against a wall. In excellent original structural condition.
Overall, the Fine Quality Mahogany Sofa expresses a radiant stately appearance which is reflected by the hand of a Masterful New York City Cabinetmaker.
