DOG HEAD – GREEN STONE SCULPTURE
20th Century

A conscious reaction to the dog sculpture is first an appreciation of its surface form. There is a element of pleasure in running one’s hand across the figure. In the sleek lines there is beauty in the essence of its form. This is a finely carved modeling image of a dog. The carver depends on his dog for his lively hood as both live in intimate union with each other. This can also be seen with the carving’s horizontal plane (a flat base), as is it creating the impression of their association is a fixed location in space.

There are obviously many ways to look at this sculpture. Not only as a piece of Art, but also the carver’s ideas and symbolic implications.
The carver’s intention may have been a position of psychological support, by putting him in contact with the soul of his dog. Both becoming a real experience with less hesitation and doubt in their journey together.
