TROTTING HORSE – IRON SILHOUETTE WEATHERVANE
Probably Penn. ( Anonymous maker )
Circa 1860 – 1880

The silhouette horse weathervane is one of a blacksmith’s simplest forms. Yet, in this Vane there is a essential character far from the norm. The Trotting Horse profile is tremendous; replicating a exuberantly contrived folk portraiture.

Immediately upon one’s first observation, it is a outstanding Silhouette Horse Weathervane that depicts a restrained power. A large scale sheet iron vane constructed with two laminated well defined sheets, hand wrought iron strap all secured by hand hammered rivets. The vane has its exceptional original untouched patina and surface with remnants of a gilt finish. The horse is integrated with a distinctive zig -zag motif on a wind-blown mane and tail. A striking design feature, visually and mechanically, is the three dimensional head from applied lead.

The skill of this 19th Century Artisan can be seen in this early non-commercial weathervane. This Fine Trotting Horse Weathervane demonstrates ( proportion, balance & artistic folk integrity ),as well as, a visual energy that wound be a excellent addition to anyone’s Folk Art / Americana Collection.
