RARE SURVIVING AMERICAN SPOON RACK

Hudson River Valley, New York

Circa 1700 – 1740

This Extremely Rare American Spoon Rack has survived with its original painted surface now a dry crusty oxidized red paint which is well preserved. It has a lollipop top with a carved triangular faceted compass resting on a chip carved arch surrounding the first of seven matching carved compass stars.

Dividing these carvings, is the spoon rack’s bars which are grooved into the front. Each bar has four openings so that the entire rack with it’s three bars can hold twelve spoons. Each bar is nailed in place with rose head nails from the back. The spoon rack’s bars have carved front surfaces which are stepped and well defined. Each bar creates the effect as if they are supporting the carved compass stars.

Below the last spoon bar are the two remaining carved triangular star compass which conform to the lollipop carving on the top. The bottom edge of the rack is chip carved with graphic decoration which complete the overall design. The carved patterns, reminiscent of ancestral arts, along with its general construction, reveal the extraordinary originality of this utilitarian spoon rack.

This very rare example of America’s early heritage is in the most desired state of preservation. The spoon racks three hundred year old ” Untouched Condition ” with decorative designs and seasoned surface truly make this an American 18th Century Treasure.
