SHERATON BOWFRONT CHEST
New England – Massachusetts
Circa 1815 – 1825
This chest exemplifies North Shore furniture during the Federal Period. In wonderful refurbished condition it includes a high quality refinish with appropriate replaced brasses. The swell front chest has a graceful restrained design with a colorful bowed facade having four drawers, ovolo corners on the top, reeded legs, scalloped skirt with central drop raised on swelled ring-turned cylindrical legs.
The figured veneers serve to emphasize the symmetrical design of the drawer fronts. The facade is compartmentalized by creating a visual separation of each drawer into three parts using elliptical and rectangular matched veneer panels. The cabinetmaker’s high level of design and workmanship choose to enliven the chest’s effect by having the central panels as ovals.
The cabinetmaker’s design and choice of materials created a most dramatic and successful Fine Quality Sheraton Inlaid ( 12 Panel ) Chest.
