QUEEN ANNE CARVED CHERRY HIGHBOY
Wethersfield, Connecticut
Attributed Porter-Belden Group
Circa 1750-1775

This wonderfully proportioned 18th century Queen Anne two-part flat top highboy relates directly to other highboys made in the Wethersfield, Connecticut area. The distinguishing features of this fine example place it within the Portwe-Belden Group of cabinetmakers. The upper case has its original cove molded rectangular cornice above a deep center concave shell carved drawer flanked by two mirror image small drawers over four long graduated drawers. The lower case is fitted with a waist molding above a single shallow long drawer which is over three deep drawers. The central drawer has a corresponding deep carved concave shell drawer. The well defined flowing cyma shaped skirt, creates a wonderful silhouette. It is typical of pieces from the Wethersfield area. All is raised and supported by four nicely proportioned cabriole legs. The graceful modeled cabriole legs have pointed knees with shaped returns terminating down to platformed pad feet.
