MADELEINE (Matthew Bonnet) COLACE
MONUMENTAL EMBROIDERY
“TROPICAL PARADISE”
Circa mid 20th Century

Madeleine Colace ( 1907 – 2001 )

Madeleine Colace, a most important figure in 20th century embroidery, created this
exceptional monumental embroidery. Her technique was the “Brazilian stich”.
A innovative stitch that is Colace’s creation.
The first new embroidery stitch created in the last 400 years.

The “Brazilian stich” has given Colace the ability to create the non-conflicting background structure in this art form. A free creative composition without any predetermined direction. There is a pulsating rhythm through the juxtaposition of color and the substle textures of mixing threads (wool, silk, cotton, & metallic threads) along with beads and a mixture of stitches.

Colace’s embroidery with its ornamental motifs and patterns was inspired from her coexistence with nature, surrounding habitate and folk culture. The humorous interaction among the birds, flora fauna and wild life focuses on beauty and balance of form.
The embroidery has a luminous movement with a sense of rhythm and freedom reflecting on innocence and a sense of warmth.

This tropical landscape is a striking piece of embroidery that combines Colace’s experiences, sensibility and there relationship between reality. A scare embroidery of monumental scale, abstract stylized forms and Madeleine Colace’s vivid imagination has created a wonderful piece of art.
