MARBLE TOP PIER TABLE
Circa 1825-1830
New York, New York
The Pier Table was a important piece of furniture during the Classical Period.
This table represents a fine example of its form and is a style that
is frequently attributed to “ Joseph Meeks & Sons ” of New York.
Pier Tables of this quality were ubiguitous in fine houses of the period.
This table is distinguished by the use of rosewood, original marble top,
freestanding white marble columns at the front and mirror pilasters
flanking the central mirror at the back. Each marble column is toped
with a nicely modeled Corinthian capitals over leaf carvings and terminates
downward to acanthus carving over strong front paw feet. A incurvate platform
base breaks out under the columns having richly carved cornucopia brackets.
A technique characteristic of New York craftsmanship on high-style furniture
is the application of gilding, hand painted and stenciled decorations.
This typical feature was skillfully executed and employs classical motifs
which are boldly accented by the deep colored rosewood background.
The gold decorations imitates more expensive ormolu mounts
while the linear geometric borders stimulates cut-brass inlay.
The Classical Period is epitomized and a statement of strength and power
was accomplished by the cabinetmaker in this masculine yet elegant Pier Table.
