PAINT DECORATED BOX
Found in New Jersey
Circa 1840 – 1860

A charming elaborate free hand paint decorated curved lid box. The original paint decorations are symmetrical and cover the field of the top, front, back and sides. Top, front and back panels are decorated with a woven basket which is the support for an evenly balanced arrangement of tulips, sprays and barn symbols disposed around a curiously constructed multi-colored heart motif. Decorated side panels are also symmetrical centering with a large barn symbol having tulips and sprays surrounding. Each decorated panel has two solid border lines which frame their intricate decoration.

The unknown decorator’s vivid colors and decorations are executed with subtlety and refinement. The combined elements are well contrasted and balanced in such a fashion that is reminiscent of a fracture-decorator.

Original as found condition – no paint restoration.
Interior has original wall paper covering.
Without analyze, bottom board appears to be a stained Poplar.
