FEDERAL TRAVELING DESK – “CAPTAIN’S BOX”

This traveling desk was sometimes referred to as a Captain’s Box. Easily mobile to meet the specific needs of a field officer or captain. It offers a full suite of office organization in its compact profile. The cherry construction of this rural example is unusual with its folding outward top having build in Hepplewhite tapered legs to hold up a work surface on which to write. The upper writing interior has a lift up panel to a opening configuration w/ hidden compartment. Its hinged upper cap folds back and away to reveal individual compartments for writing implements pen, inkwell and more. This is all above a full dovetailed drawer for large document storage.
In complete estate found condition with no restorations.
The original leather writing surface is gone.
Ivory keyhole escutcheons on lid and drawer.
Brasses replaced.
