CHIPPENDALE OXBOW CHEST
Massachusetts
Circa 1760 – 1780

Upon first observing this Fine Quality Chippendale Chest, special attention should be given towards its rare small scale. The chest’s very appealing (33 1/4″) case width creates a wonderful visual scale and proportion.

The balanced cabinetry of this chest has a sweeping oxbow form that terminates in blocked ends. The one board moulded edge top is in relationship on a conforming shaped case. Its case houses four long graduated drawers surrounded by cockbead moulding. The line of the case blocking continues downwards onto the bracket feet. The employment of its blocked ends enhances the visual of its compact design. The close grained mahogany from which the chest was fashioned is now in a mellow nut brown color. The 18th Century Massachusetts craftsman has made a Fine Quality Chippendale Chest with a respectable presence which is appropriate for anyone’s Americana Collection.
