CHIPPENDALE FAN CARVED CHEST on CHEST

Circa 1760 – 1790
This chest on chest represents the creativity from a rural cabinetmaker. The cabinetmaker worked in birch with all parts relatively plain but in good taste showing a talented hand. This piece suggests more than a passing knowledge of fashionable Chippendale Design through the integration of well defined carving and balanced symmetry which unites a sense of beauty with its overall small scale.
The upper case is crowned by a molded cornice with five tiers of graduated lipped drawers. the upper one divided into three small drawers. The central one with a crisply carved fan. The lower case has a applied molding to the top which terminates to four tiers of graduated lipped drawers. The graduation of all the drawers were favorable done with appropriate brass hardware that has a choice pattern dressing the face of this chest on chest.
There is a base molding at the front and sides, the chest is lifted and supported by a tastefully developed bracket feet with scrolled returns having a conforming shaped pendant centered on the base molding. The chest’s seasoned finish (possible original) is a desired color offering a visual satisfaction.
