WALNUT  DUTCH  CUPBOARD

Pennsylvania

Circa 1800 -1820

A statement of strength and power was accomplished by the cabinetmaker in this masculine two-part Dutch Cupboard. There is a fine balance between plain surfaces and the good sense of proportion. One can sense and feel the total reference to the architectural sleekness of design and the serene character of elegant restraint and refinement. The top section has a pleasing overhanging cornice above a pair of nine glass pane doors. The interior has its original paint under a oxidized white wash which houses three shelves, two having interior spoon holders. The top steps back over a molded broad base. Below are four short drawers over two raised panel doors. Both pairs of doors retain their original rat-tail hinges and are flanked by modest chamfer corners. The total cupboard rests on its nicely turned original feet. The beauty of the composition is enhanced by a wonderful state of preservation, as well as, its mellow nut brown patina. Until our purchase this wonderful Dutch Cupboard in “as found condition” has rested in a NYS collection where it has been since the 1970’s.
