FEDERAL CARD TABLE
Boston
Circa 1790-1810
Possibly by Elisha Tucker
A wonderful Federal Inlaid Card Table made in the manner of Elisha Tucker Boston, Massachusetts.
This fine Federal card table has a shaped top with serpentine sides and a bowed front. Its inlay is common to Boston Federal furniture. On both the hinged fly-leaf and the fixed top there is a rosewood and tiger maple banding within a string pattern inlay. The fixed top rests above a conforming apron with front and side panels adorned with birds-eye maple panels. Rectangular decorative inlays are applied to the center of the skirt which is flanked by cross banding. The pilasters do not interrupt the flow of the apron with its maple continuing to the aprons side panels. Conforming with the hinged fly-leaf and the fixed top is the bottom edge of the aprons edge inlay. The table is supported on four square tapered legs with line inlay and banded cuffs. Front legs have a delicate bellflower.
Both construction and the design of this Fine Quality Card Table relate to examples made in boston. Card tables with similar inlay and veneers adornments, as well as, its shape were made by Elisha Tucker of Boston.
