MAHOGANY BOOKCASE
Attributed to DUNCAN PHYFE or one of his Contemporaries
New York City
Circa 1830’s

A statement of strength & power was accomplished by the cabinetmaker in this masculine yet elegant bookcase. This Important two-piece Bookcase does not rely on heavy carving for its power; but its total use of excellent quality mahogany requiring no further embellishment. There is a fine balance between plain surfaces and the good sense of proportion that oppose each other in their alternation rhythms of movement.

After total examination, one can sense & feel the total reference to the architectural sleekness of design and the serene character of elegant restraint and refinement that was the Restauration Period introduced in France.

All the above is reflecting an era during which self improvement societies and Classical Academies were popular and a way of life.

There were not many successful American Bookcases for this period. However with Duncan Phyfe’s expert craftsmanship; skillful design; and his sensitive eye to proportion he created a well balanced Highly Desirable example as can be seen in this Important Mahogany Bookcase
