CHIPPENDALE SERPENTINE CHEST

CONNECTICUT RIVER VALLEY

Circa 1790 – 1800

This Fine Chest of drawers with a serpentine facade, fluted half columns, gadroon strip, and shaped ogee bracket base demonstrates and fulfills a Chippendale character within its Rural cabinetry. The shaped top, is attached with a sliding dovetail overhanging the case on three sides with front shaped in conformity with the serpentine case. The case houses four graduated serpentine drawers cut from the solid each is outlined by cock beading on the case, as well as, on the molding on the drawer dividers. There is base molding at the front and sides. All the above is supported by four carved ogee bracket feet proportionate to the chest’s stature. A rich golden cherry color having a old patina adds to the exciting nature of this Fine Connecticut Chest.

It is difficult to have any attribution to a specific town or cabinet shop. The chest’s variations in construction & design can be seen in cabinet shops throughout Hartford County and Eastern Massachusetts Towns.
