CHIPPENDALE CLAW and BALL FOOT CHEST
Massachusetts
Circa 1760 – 1780
A wonderful small compact size Chippendale Ball and Claw Foot Chest. With a 34 6/8” case width, this oxbow blocked end chest is constructed of solid mahogany with a beautiful flaming grain. The overhanging rectangular top has a thumb-molded edge. Its projecting oxbow front is above a conforming case fitted with four long graduated drawers. Each drawer has incised-beaded edges. The above is raised on a molded base with well carved claw and ball feet having shaped returns.
The careful craftsmanship with its desirable small size, blocking to add boldness to the compact form, superior mahogany and finely modeled ball and claw feet all combine to show the work of a first rank Massachusetts Cabinetmaker.
