CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIR
New York
Circa 1760 – 1780
A New York Chippendale Side Chair based on English design.
Shown is a complicated ornate back design. This excellent quality chair has carving executed from a accomplished cabinet shop. A interlaced splat which is incorporating a gothic pattern pierced with owl’s eyes, pointed arches, carved ruffles and rosettes. This is flanked by fluted and stop-fluted stiles.
Above is a shaped crest rail set off by defined well executed carving. Straight front legs have a carved beaded edge and are jointed with stretchers. Probably its original surface, the chair is in wonderful condition.
This Fine Quality Side Chair exhibits close similarities in design and construction and possibly was made in one of the same cabinet shops as the Verplanck Family chairs.
