CARVED SPREAD WING EAGLE SHELF
Found in New York
Circa 1830-1860
This carved pine eagle is in flight. The displayed eagle is carved in deep relief in a spread winged pose and mounted as a architectural ornament to a acanthus carved shelf. The eagles plumage is carved in a realistically three dimensional pose with clinched talons. It was intended to be seen from below as indicated by the carved detailing. This eagle is a typical nineteenth century interpretation of our national emblem.
