AMERICAN QUEEN ANNE WALNUT VENEERED DRESSING TABLE / LOWBOY
Massachusetts
Circa 1730-1750

A scarce Massachusetts Queen Anne walnut crotch veneered Dressing Table with herringbone veneered top and drawer fronts. A wonderful veneered scalloped apron all supported on cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. This eighteenth Century American dressing table is in the Boston style, but with slight differences indicating an origin outside the city itself, and probably to the north along the coast of Massachusetts.

Throughout the eighteenth century as referred within period documents, the term dressing table was used for this furniture form. Today this form is know as a lowboy. This wonderful 18th Century Queen Anne Dressing Table / Lowboy, with its classic Massachusetts features, epitomizes the grace of the Queen Anne period.

The top has thumbnail molding at the front and sides and overhangs the case on all four sides. The top has four matching central panels of crotch veneer outlined by two opposed bands in a herringbone pattern. This is surrounded by a broad band of cross-banding veneer and bordered by an outer double herringbone veneer band. The case holds five drawers, two drawers above three in a row. The row of three drawers has the central one smaller in height and a wider width than its flanking drawers. Each drawer is framed by a double bead with a channel between. The drawers, as the top, are faced with veneer and bordered by an outer double herringbone veneer band. Appropriately replaced brasses and the drawer pulls are secured by cotter pins, as was typical in the period. The veneered front skirt is shaped with a unusual high central arch. The side skirts flanking are also shaped to flathead arch. This high central arch in the skirt is a late William and Mary and Early Queen Anne Design while the lipped drawers are an early Queen Anne feature. The case is supported and lifted on four graceful cabriole legs with pointed knees that taper and terminate in pad feet.

The organization of this refurbished Dressing Table is unified and harmonious. Complementing is the sensuous quality of its surface design, the brilliantly figured veneers. A upwards vertical movement is accentuated by the central arch of the apron and the tall graceful legs. A Fine Quality Queen Anne Walnut Dressing Table in very good condition has a sprightly stance that seems to personify the remarkable Massachusetts vigor and aesthetic.
