WORKING HORSES
Found in Oswego, New York
Late 19th Early 20th Century

The artist has captured the true realism of prairie life as it was known. Rural country life depicted as an interdependence of the farmer and his livestock, men and their work horses shown harnessed for the day’s work. The artist gives a deliberate feeling of pulling and hauling towards the wild beauty of the distant horizon. This scene dispels any romantic notion about peasantry and the impoverished countryside, instead it depicts the joy found in hard labor. This idyllic setting is a reminder of how easy beauty is forgotten in the midst of struggle.

This oil painting on canvas is rendered with strong bold brush strokes. The compositions has an unforced naturalness that breathes rural life still untouched by industrialism.
