QUILL WEATHERVANE
Circa 20th Century ( 1st thru 2nd quarter )
A well proportioned molded and sheet copper quill. Mounted on a rod with ball finial topped with a spire. Through many centuries the quill pen was the principle instrument used for writing. The form is often associated to a lawyer, teacher or minister.
The quill weathervane became an actual “feather in the wind.” Reference: Myrna Kaye; Yankee Weathervanes; E P Dutton & Co; 1975. Quills were made from a good strong flight feather from a bird. This form having a perfect pointing shape and a fletched tail lents itself beautifully to a weathervane.
Good surface with original gilt and patina, undisturbed condition overall. Mounted on steel museum style stand
