SCARE SMALL WHALE WEATHERVANE
New England
Circa 1920-1940

A wonderful full-bodied hollow copper weathervane in a molded form of a sperm whale. The whale’s scale has beautiful form with a folk art appearance. Its scarce dimensional quality is enhanced by the applied open eyes, raised tail & open mouth. From a private New England collection, the vane is in a old weathered surface that still retains traces of its original gilding.
During the mid-19th century New England was famous for their whale hunting parties. Whale blubber was used as an agent in lighting devices. Today New England is famous for their whale watching tours and sites.
