PAINT DECORATED WORK TABLE
New England
Circa 1825 – 1835
A traditional form equivalent in visual terms to its urban counter part ( a classical mahogany work table from Boston 1820-1830 ) yet for rural furniture a rare form for painted American furniture. Exuberant of form and design, this work table which is excelled by its freehand decoration. The paint decoration of black-over-red graining transcend to a mere imitation of an exotic wood – mahogany or rosewood. This original painted surface, bold and frankly expressive was a alternative to materials that were not available in the rural areas. Made in a period of early prosperity for American history this table must have once been the prize of its rural household. It is a work of art highly expressive having strong appeal today to those who perceive the vigor of the creative expressionism of painted furniture and American folk art.
