Wooden full size northern pintail drake decoy, signed and dated on bottom “R Madison Mitchell 1971”. Carved with its detailed original paint. Painted Eyes, Solid Body, has original weight on bottom. Showing some wear to surface. View images for details.
Mitchell began carving in 1924, and carved until his eye sight went bad in the 1980s.His style is characterized by carefully detailed feathers and painting. He is known as “the dean of Havre de Grace decoy makers.” Mitchell’s decoys are showcased in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, but most of his work is immortalized in the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, Maryland
