Columbia County, New York
Late 19th Early 20th Century
A scarce NEST of TACONIC BASKETS possibly by Liz Proper the last surviving Taconic (Taghkanic) basket maker.
Taconic baskets also called bushwhacker baskets are a classic example of a regional folk craft, getting their name from the Taconic Hills, Columbia County, New York where they were made. The nest of five is a wonderful example of unilitarian folk art made with ingenious craftsmanship that can be fixed to a particular regional area.
In excellent condition, each splint basket is beautiful and finely crafted of hand-woven ash and oak. These baskets display the classic Taconic basket making techniques – double wrapped rim, pushed-up base, carved notched ears and a carved swing handle.
The quality and condition of this Nest of Taconic Baskets deserves a place of honor in any basket or folk art collection.
